It’s earthquake season and not only did New England have quite the shake this week, but California is on constant quake watch. What are you actually supposed to do when an earthquake happens though? How can you prepare when they can come at any moment? We have put together a list of tips for surviving a huge earthquake as a 20-something.

10. Keep a pair of sneakers and a case of water in your car.

Californians spend most of their time stuck in traffic around the city. You never know where you’ll be when a quake strikes so you should always be prepared to walk or hydrate wherever you may be.

9. Prepare your earthquake kit with the following items:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Matches
  • Blanket
  • Battery operated cell phone charger
  • Small First aid kit
  • Water
  • AM Radio
  • Comfy Shoes
  • Tampons
  • Swiss Army Knife
  • Change of Clothes
  • Cliff Bars (or another type of snack!)

8. Make sure there’s a table or desk nearby

The best place to get during an earthquake is under a sturdy table or desk so that when things fall around you, they don’t actually hit you!

7. Secure your wall deco

You should make sure that all the art you put up around your apartment is tightly secure to avoid all of it falling and breaking during a quake.

6. Always have fixings for a martini on-hand

You’re in the middle of a horrible earthquake and you watch your TV and other expensive items crash to the floor, let’s face it, you’re going to need a drink after seeing that. Plus, you wont need a shaker during an earthquake!

  • Quake-tini
    • Two ounces of vodka
    • One ounce of cranberry juice
    • One ounce of triple sec
    • Dash of lime juice

5. Renter’s insurance is a must!

Check out renter’s insurance at your apartment complex. You seriously might need to think about investing in it just in case something happens.

4. Always have new books you’ve never read

There’s no Comedy Wednesdays when the cable goes out during a bad earthquake, so pick up a little light reading like Chelsea Handler’s books or the 50 Shades of Grey series!

 3. Keep a diary

Keep a day-by-day of your experience because you can start a really cool blog or one day even get a Lifetime movie made about your experience! Fingers crossed!

2. Find a buddy

It sucks to be alone during an earthquake so if something major happens plan something with a friend around you to meet somewhere in case of emergency so you guys can go through it together!

1. Mentally prepare for no Internet!

If something big does happen, it’s time to prepare yourself and realize that you may not be able to update your Facebook status or tweet all about it. It might just be that social detox that you’ve been needing!
