Conserving energy and “going green” can be an entire lifestyle adjustment. But it doesn’t have to be that hard. For simple ways to be more eco-friendly around the home, Life2PointOh caught up with Jansen White, a spokeswoman for Clearview Electric.

Around the House
1. Water heating is the second largest energy expense in the home and usually accounts for nearly 18 percent of your utility bill. You can cut your water heating bills four different ways: use less hot water, turn down the thermostat on the water heater, insulate the water heater, or buy a newer model.

2. Lower the thermostat on the water heater to 120°F. “You can save as much as 10 percent a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7°-10°F for eight hours a day from where you would normally set,” she says.

3. Install white window shades, drapes, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house.

Lighting
Replace 15 inefficient incandescent bulbs in your home with energy-saving bulbs. This switch could save you around $50 a year. To save more energy, replace old incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR-qualified bulbs.

Laundry
“Unless you’re dealing with oily stains, the warm or cold water setting on your machine will generally do a good job of cleaning your clothes,” White tells us. “Switching your temperature setting from hot to warm can cut a load’s energy use in half.” Occasionally check your dryer vent to make sure it’s not blocked since this can save energy and prevent possible fires.

What are you doing to live an eco-friendly life?
